First year achievements

The first year of Skilling South Australia had a noticeable impact on our training system.

Working to turn our training system around, we saw an increase in apprenticeship commencements for the first time in seven years. This means that more South Australians are on the path to securing the jobs that will flow from growth sectors, such as defence and shipbuilding.

We achieved this increase while the rest of the country continues to trend downwards, demonstrating the effectiveness of our actions. These include:

Meeting our targets
  • Nearly 13,000 commencements

  • Over 700 employers hired their first apprentice

Strategic investment
  • $200m to address the drastic decline in apprenticeships

  • Doubled the apprenticeship qualifications on the Subsidised Training List

  • Creating apprenticeships in new industries

Industry voice
  • Revitalised the Training and Skills Commission

  • Established eight Industry Skills Councils

Partnerships
  • Over 80 projects developed in partnership with business

  • $1m to support training provider capability

Changing perceptions
  • Over 80 projects developed in partnership with business

  • $1m to support training provider capability
